PhonePe Users Shocked: Inactive Wallets Face ₹100 Quarterly Maintenance Fee, Sparking Massive Online Backlash
ఫ న ప య జర లక ష – When it comes to digital payments, the name that immediately comes to mind in India is PhonePe. From roadside stalls to large shopping malls, users rely on the app for seamless transactions. However, the company has recently sent a jolt to its customers by introducing a new policy. If a wallet remains unused for 12 consecutive months, a quarterly maintenance fee of ₹100 will be deducted from the balance.
Controversy Over Inactivity Charges
Users who don’t actively use their PhonePe wallets are now at risk of losing money. The fee applies only to wallets with a balance, meaning empty accounts won’t incur any charges. This rule, though not entirely new, has gained attention due to the company’s recent notifications. Many customers are confused, as they often link their bank accounts directly to UPI and use it for transactions, bypassing the wallet feature altogether.
“Seriously, what is this, PhonePe? They’ve started warning users that inactive wallets will be charged ₹100 every quarter after 12 months of no activity. Most people don’t even use the PhonePe Wallet. They rely on UPI from their bank accounts and may not even realize…”
Meanwhile, a popular tech influencer, Abhishek Yadav, has shared his concerns on social media. He highlighted that while the policy targets wallet balances, it creates inconvenience for users who are unaware of the implications. His post has amplified the public’s frustration, with many expressing anger over the unexpected charges.
Key Clarification for Users
There’s a silver lining: the penalty only affects the PhonePe Wallet balance, not regular UPI transactions. This means users who haven’t used the wallet but still have a balance should clear it promptly. The move has triggered widespread reactions, with digital India users criticizing the added costs on their otherwise free services.
